Shawnee Heights trips Free State, 2-0

? Against the second-ranked team in Class 5A, the Free State High boys soccer squad had its first wake-up call of the season in a 2-0 loss Thursday at Shawnee Heights.

The Thunderbirds scored the game’s goals in the first 15 minutes. Along with taking away any aggressive edge the Firebirds had, Shawnee Heights’ roster — which includes 17 seniors — dominated a Free State squad that starts three freshman.

“After (the first two goals), we played a lot better and competed,” Firebirds’ coach Jason Pendleton said. “In soccer, 2-0 is a pretty good deficit. We’re not used to getting behind in a game, and it kind of took us out of our aggressive mindset.”

The Firebirds (7-1-1) will play host to K.C. Wyandotte at 10 a.m. Saturday.
