Lucas, Cowboys surge early

Okie State routs SMU; Texas, K-State each win

? The biggest problem Oklahoma State is having this season is getting the offense going. The good news Monday night was it happened in the first half.

After seeing the sixth-ranked Cowboys struggle into the second half the last two games, John Lucas scored 11 points in a 17-4 run late in the first half, helping Oklahoma State take control of what turned into a 76-57 victory over SMU on Monday night.

“I just settled down,” said Lucas, who finished with 24 points. “I missed my first three shots. I just wanted to keep going and keep my team up. … We wanted to jump up on them from the start.”

Oklahoma State (4-0) was down by four when Joey Graham hit consecutive jumpers to tie the game at 15. Then Lucas scored three straight baskets, the last one a three-pointer, to put the Cowboys ahead for good. After another basket by Graham, Lucas had a four-point play, giving them a nine-point lead that never again was threatened.

The victory was sealed midway through the second half when Lucas threw an alley-oop pass to Stephen Graham coming out of a timeout, sparking a 7-0 spurt that put Oklahoma State up 64-44.

In what technically was Oklahoma State’s first road game — even if it didn’t seem like it because the majority of fans were pro-Cowboys — they also cleaned up two other weak areas, foul shooting and rebounding. Oklahoma State made all 14 attempts from the line and had three more rebounds than the Mustangs (2-1), who had grabbed 33 more boards than their opponents over their first two games.

The win also was a milestone for Cowboys coach Eddie Sutton — No. 759, tying Ed Diddle for eighth place on the Division One career list. Next up is Sutton’s mentor, Henry Iba, who had 767 victories.

“I guess if you coach long enough, you are going to win as many games as I do,” Sutton said.

No. 18 Texas 86, Coppin State 50

Austin, Texas — Freshman Daniel Gibson scored 17 points, and the Longhorns hit 16 three-pointers, two shy of the school record. Texas (4-1) has hit at least 10 three-pointers in all its games this season and nearly reached that mark in the first half, getting nine.

Oklahoma State's Terrence Crawford (42) reaches for a steal as Southern Methodist's Bryan Hopkins tries to maintain control. The Cowboys beat the Mustangs, 76-57, Monday in Dallas.

Darryl Proctor led Coppin State (0-3) with 11 points.

At least four Longhorns have reached double figures in all five games. Against the Eagles, it was Gibson, Kenny Taylor (14), Kenton Paulino (13) and Jason Klotz (11).

Kansas State 76, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 42

Manhattan — Clent Stewart scored a career-high 15 points, and Kansas State used stifling defense to beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Stewart was 5-for-5 on three-pointers, including back-to-back threes with 7:31 to go in the first half to give Kansas State a 22-6 lead.

The Wildcats (4-0) held Pine Bluff to just 15 percent shooting in the first half to lead 32-10 at halftime. The Golden Lions had scoreless droughts of 4:22 and 5:41 before going the final 6:19 without a basket.

Tamarius Brown scored 13 points to lead Pine Bluff (0-3), which has lost 18 in a row dating to last season.
