Local stats not available

Detailed statistics about violent crime from 1992 to 2002 in Kansas schools were not immediately available Monday from the Kansas State Department of Education because the department’s Web site was down.

During the 2002-2003 school year, 319 felonies were committed at Kansas schools during normal school days, according to the department; more than 135 felonies were committed on school property outside the normal school day.

Violent crime statistics for the Lawrence district were not available Monday. But Rick Gammill, the district’s director of special operations, transportation and safety, said he was not aware of any rapes, robberies or murders on school grounds or at school activities from 1992 to 2002.

“That’s just something that we have not had in our district,” Gammill said.
