KU – Nevada briefs

Passing Wilt

Kansas University’s Keith Langford (1,436 points) passed Wilt Chamberlain for 18th on KU’s all-time scoring list.

“I feel honored to have accomplished that,” Langford said. “I wish it would have happened a little sooner, but I look forward to passing up a few more people on the list.”

Giddens taped

J.R. Giddens had two fingers on his left hand taped. He dislocated the finger next to his pinkie against Saint Joseph’s.

“It’s still a little swollen, so I have to be careful,” Giddens said, “but it’s fine.”

Freshmen big men

KU coach Bill Self called upon Sasha Kaun as his first freshman big man off the bench. Kaun had five boards in 14 minutes. C.J. Giles had a career-best eight boards in 10 minutes, and Darnell Jackson had one board and two points in six minutes.

“He (Kaun) has practiced better than the other two of late,” Self said of Kaun. “I think C.J. played well tonight. There will be nights we won’t play all three of them. We’ll play the two who are playing the best.”

Giles fell hard on his elbow in the second half, but was OK.

This, that

Aaron Miles’ 10 assists moved him into a tie with Jacque Vaughn for the most double-figure assist games in KU history with 18. … Alex Galindo’s six points, all late, marked a career high. Giles’ eight boards marked a career high. … The loss was Nevada’s worst since a 38-point loss to North Texas in February of 1999.

Chiefs in house

Several Kansas City Chiefs were spotted in the stands, including Willie Roaf, Tony Gonzalez and Dante Hall.

Honors

Langford, Miles and Wayne Simien are three of 30 candidates for the fourth-annual Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS award.

The award is presented annually to the country’s senior player of the year for NCAA Division One.

Ten finalists will be announced in February, with the winner announced at the Final Four.

KU has the most players represented on the list. Arizona, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State each have two.

CLASS stands for “Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School.”

Series update

The University of Nevada will return to Kansas again next year to complete a 2-for-2 deal. KU played two games last year at the Dodge Holiday Classic in Reno — one against the Wolf Pack and the other against Cal-Santa Barbara.
