Brush center to reopen to help with cleanup

The city is reopening its brush recycling center for the next five days to help area residents with cleanup efforts from last week’s storms.

The center, 1420 E. 11th St., will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

City officials will accept only tree debris at the center. The brush must be free of trash, and lumber will not be accepted. There is no charge for residents to drop off brush at the center.

Residents who do not want to take brush to the recycling center can trim materials to a maximum length of 5 feet, secure it into bundles not more than 18 inches in diameter or 65 pounds in weight, and place them at the curb on their regular trash day.

Two dogs shot, owner wants to press charges

A police report called it a “lawful” killing of a dog.

But the owner of two boxer dogs shot west of Lawrence after they wandered onto a neighbor’s property says she wants to press charges.

The incident happened Thursday near the intersection of North 1700 and East 550 roads. A 61-year-old man told sheriff’s deputies he was in his home and saw the dogs chasing his cattle in his cattle pen. He came outside and shot the dogs with a 12-gauge shotgun, said Lt. Stephen Brown, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokesman.

One of the dogs, a 5-year-old albino named Daisy, died. The other, a 4-year-old named Socks, survived.

The dogs’ owner, Rose Brown, said she called the sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices Monday asking to press charges against the neighbor. She said the dogs weren’t on the man’s property at the time of the shooting and alleged he pointed the shotgun at her and her 27-year-old son. The man couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.
