Maren Turner, Lawrence, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of Midland Hospice Care. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in mental health and counseling from Columbia Union College and a Master of Science degree in developmental psychology from Howard University. She is pursuing a doctorate in human development and family life at Kansas University. Turner has been the state director for AARP since 1999.
¢Kenneth Peirce II, of First State Bank & Trust in Lawrence, recently completed the 2004 Commercial Lending School. The school, which provides instruction in the commercial lending process, was Oct. 18-22 in Omaha, Neb. The school is sponsored by the Kansas and Nebraska Bankers Associations.
¢Cardinal Brands Inc. recently announced the appointment of Howard Hoffman to director of retail sales. Hoffman's primary focus will be on the Generations product line.
Hoffman has been involved in the hobby and craft Industry for more than 25 years. He served as president of Hobby Industry Assn. for two years and served on the board for seven years. His background includes chain retailing, marketing and sales management. Hoffman has a doctorate in chiropractic from Logan College in Missouri and will be located in Cardinal Brands' Lawrence office.
¢The Associated Landscape Contractors of America announced that Glen Westervelt, Frank Male and Daryl Webb, of Lawrence Landscape Inc., recently passed the certified landscape professional examination given in Charlotte, N.C.
The six-hour exam covers all aspects of working in the landscape industry. It is divided into five sections: business; risk, law and contracts; human resources and health/safety; production/ operation and horticulture; sales, marketing, communications and public relations.
The certification program promotes the growth and credibility of the landscape industry. It provides professional recognition to individuals engaged in the business of landscape contracting.
¢Kelvin Heck, branch broker and vice president of Grubb & Ellis/The Winbury Group, attended the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors fall professional conference. The conference was Nov. 4-6 in Baltimore. Session topics included listing exclusive investment properties, tenant representative networking, coaching strategies for commercial brokerage, and an investment property market "haves and wants."
¢Bonnie Cackler, Chris Kanawyer, Rebecca Lucas, Brandy Granville, Mark Rystrom and Bobbie Krueger recently completed their programs in massage therapy at Pinnacle Career Institute. Krueger also has a medical assistant certificate.
Larissa Loechner and Tracy Rameriz, medical assisting students, finished the externship component of their program.
¢Janis Bunker, senior vice president of The Trust Company of Kansas, attended the Kansas Bankers Association Trust Division fall conference Oct. 14-15 in Topeka. The conference featured a review of the Uniform Trust Code.
¢Cassandra Woolworth, co-owner of R&D Technology, has been elected president of the Home Business Connection. Its mission is to promote professional growth through support, networking and education for home and small businesses in the Kansas City area. Woolworth has operated R&D for almost 10 years, providing Web site design and development. She also is part-owner of CartFactory.com and Spamwall.net. She also owns and operates ServeTheWeb.com.
¢P. Chad Clayton recently passed the certified protection professional examination. Clayton is director of the Protective Services Division for Kansas City, Mo.-based CMKA, where he has worked since 1997.
Robert Hope recently retained his designation as a certified protection specialist. Hope is the operations manager of the Protective Services Division for CMKA, where he has worked since 2003.
Honors and awards
Kansas Main Street cities were recognized for outstanding achievements in revitalizing their downtowns. Howard Fricke, secretary of the Department of Commerce, presented the Governor's Awards of Excellence on Main Street at the annual Main Street conference Oct. 5-7 in McPherson. Ottawa and Leavenworth received 2004 Governor's Awards of Excellence on Main Street.
Ottawa received design awards for Kendra and Jonathan Harnden's second-floor renovation, Downtown Kiosks and Feldkamp's Furniture. It received honors for its image promotion, "See Us In a While New Light." Ottawa received an organization award and reinvestment award for reinvesting $3 million. Bob Marsh was named a Volunteer of the Year.
Leavenworth earned economic restructuring awards for High Noon Saloon and Abernathy Lofts. It also received a promotion award for Discovery Days Lewis & Clark and Leavenworth's 150th birthday. It also received two organization awards.
¢Laurie Drinkard, of Neu Physical Therapy, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to attend the 2004 International Lymphedema Network Conference in Reno, Nev. The conference was "New Frontiers in Lymphedema Research and Therapy." Drinkard was one of five certified lymphedema therapists who were selected from a national field of scholarship applicants.
The conference covered new research and treatment for conditions, including post-mastectomy and other surgeries, cancer-related edema, venous insufficiencies and combined forms of lymphedema.
