Wecker sets mark with 41; KSU rolls

? Kendra Wecker scored a school-record 41 points to lead No. 16 Kansas State to a 105-61 victory over Illinois State in the opening round of the Junkanoo Tournament on Friday.

Wecker broke the Wildcats’ record of 38 points, shared by Shawnda DeCamp, set against Detroit Mercy on November 29, 1993, and LeAnn Wilcox, set against Pfeiffer on December 22, 1978.

“Everything really fell for us tonight out there. We were just playing really well,” said Wecker, a preseason All-American. “I wasn’t looking at the numbers, so when coach told me that I need three more points, I just went out there to play basketball and to have fun.”

Wecker finished 14-of-19 from the field, including 8-of-9 from three-point range, and grabbed eight rebounds.

Megan Mahoney and Laurie Koehn each added 13 points for the Wildcats (3-0).

No. 9 Baylor 84, Sam Houston St. 53

Waco, Texas — Sophia Young had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Baylor. Chameka Scott added 13 points for the Bears (3-1), who led by as many as 37 points in the second half.

No. 21 Oklahoma 88, Akron 40

Freeport, Bahamas — Lauren Shoush and Chelsi Welch each scored 13 points for Oklahoma in the first round of the Junkanoo Jam. Shoush shot 4-of-7 from the field, including two three-pointers, and Chelsi was 3-of-7 from three-point range for the Sooners (4-0). Leah Rush added 11 points for Oklahoma and Laura Andrews had 10.
