Lauries forfeit naming rights

MU to rename arena following cheating allegations

? The family of a Wal-Mart heiress who is the namesake of the University of Missouri’s new sports arena has agreed to transfer the naming rights to the school after allegations that the young woman cheated her way through college, the university said Tuesday.

Bill and Nancy Laurie, of Columbia, Mo., received naming rights for the arena as a condition of their $25 million gift to kick-start the university’s building campaign. They named it Paige Sports Arena, for their daughter, Elizabeth Paige Laurie, but voluntarily have relinquished the naming rights, the school said.

A new name for the arena — opened about three weeks ago — has not yet been chosen, but the school said the Board of Curators would later meet to discuss one.

The announcement follows allegations that surfaced last week on ABC’s “20/20” that Laurie cheated her way through Southern Cal. Laurie’s family has declined comment.

This is the second time MU has faced a naming scandal. An economics professorship endowed by Enron Corp. founder Ken Lay continues to carry his name, although he has been accused of defrauding investors. University officials have indicated that if Lay were convicted, they would prefer to remove his name, which probably would require that his $1.1 million donation be returned.
