— Texas was having trouble with fouls and Chris Reaves' three-point shooting. The 15th-ranked Longhorns were able to overcome both and beat Chaminade, 84-62, Monday in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

"We came in knowing there's a lot of things we have to work on and we got in foul trouble early and had to work through it," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "We had a couple of guys trying to do too much and they just have to learn to let it come to them."

P.J. Tucker had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Longhorns (2-0), who will play Iowa in today's semifinals.

Reaves, a junior-college transfer, hit his first six three-point attempts, finished 8-for-10 from long range and had 33 points for the Silverswords (1-1).

"Thank goodness he was feeling it, because we couldn't do anything inside," Chaminade coach Aaron Greiss said. "We had trouble maintaining the effort in the second half when they showed their strength and athletic ability. Our guys got tired."

Texas freshman LaMarcus Aldridge picked up two fouls in the opening four minutes of the game, and classmate Daniel Gibson had two before 12 minutes elapsed. Tucker, a sophomore, picked up his third foul in the first half, and the Longhorns were forced to scramble with their young eight-man rotation.
