KU students enjoy ‘Real’ glimpse of TV stars

When it comes to reality TV shows, Mia Cole is sticking to the original.

That’s why the Kansas University sophomore was at the Kansas Union on Monday, posing for photos with cast members of MTV’s “Real World.”

“It was awesome,” Cole said. “I’ve watched it almost every season. Other reality shows seem so scripted, but not this one.”

More than 150 “Real World” fans came to the union to meet Sarah and Landon, two of seven cast members who lived in the same Philadelphia house for four months. The show, in its 15th season, chronicles the drama that unfolds when strangers are forced to cohabitate.

The two cast members are on a publicity tour of college towns. They’ve been hyping the show much of the time since filming wrapped up in August.

Sarah — cast members aren’t allowed to divulge their last names — said she wasn’t sure how to handle her newfound fame.

“I call myself a C-minus celebrity,” she said. “When we come to small college towns, people are really excited. … It’s weird. Once you’re in it, you try to humble yourself and tell yourself this is a short-term thing.”

Early in the season Sarah took off her bra and invited the others in the house to feel her surgically enhanced breasts. But she said she didn’t have any regrets about her time in the house.

“There’s some things that are hard for your parents to see or even your grandparents to see,” she said. “But my parents are very open and loving, and I’m a good person.”

Lauren Rader was among the KU students lined up to meet the cast members.

She said she watched the show religiously.

“I’m a pretty hearty fan,” the freshman said. “People know their names and know their faces, but they’re pretty down to earth.”
