Missouri falls to Davidson

Tigers toppled, 84-81, in third game at Paige Arena

? So far, there’s no homecourt advantage for Missouri in the new Paige Sports Arena. It took only three games for the Tigers to fall.

Matt McKillop scored a career-high 28 points, and Davidson got away with squandering two double-digit leads in an 84-81 victory Friday night. All but one point of a 19-point bulge got away, then a 13-point cushion was down to two points in the final minute.

“We knew they were going to keep hitting us and keep hitting us, and they did,” McKillop said. “Hey, it’s a great win.”

Davidson, which tied for first in its division of the Southern Conference last season and has four starters back, had enough poise to survive the runs for its first season-opening victory since 1996-97.

“We’ve been in this environment before, and we’re going to face this environment more times this year,” said coach Bob McKillop, Matt McKillop’s father. “This is a great experience for my players. To be successful after losing a very large lead is very encouraging.”

Davidson (1-0) was 10-for-18 from three-point range to win the first meeting between the two teams. Coach Quin Snyder noted it was the third game in five days for the Tigers, who won their first two home games over Brown and Houston in the Guardians Classic on Monday and Tuesday by a combined 24 points.

“We looked like a tired team,” Snyder said. “We looked drained, emotionally as well as physically.”

Missouri (2-1) was 405-72 in 32 seasons at the Hearnes Center before moving down the block to its new $75 million arena. The Tigers were 10-4 at home in their final season, but 40-5 the three previous seasons.
