Baker soccer wins Region V championship

Baldwin — Baker University’s men’s soccer squad won the NAIA Region V championship Saturday, beating William Jewell, 2-1 in overtime, at Baker’s field.

Marty Johnson scored the game-winner for the Wildcats in overtime off an assist from Luke Parrott. Baker’s earlier goal also was aided by Parrott on a pass to Shaun McNamara.

With the victory, Heart of America Athletic Conference champion Baker (14-3-3) earned an automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament next week in Olathe. The Wildcats likely will play Friday against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

Baker, Ottawa men win hoops games

Ottawa — Josh Flett scored 19 points, helping Baker University’s men’s basketball squad beat Midland Lutheran, 76-74, in overtime Saturday in the Ottawa Classic at Wilson Field House.

D.J. Watkins had 16 points, Ross Thompson added 15 points and seven rebounds, and David Ward had 11 points for the Wildcats. Tyler Scifers had nine assists.

Also Saturday, Brett Lickteig had 25 points, and Elvis Wheeler added 18 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and five assists in Ottawa University’s 74-68 victory over Dana College. Sam Thiessen added eight points and eight rebounds for the Braves.

Baker (4-2) will play host to University of Saint Mary at 7:30 p.m. Monday; Ottawa (3-1) travels Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game at William Jewell.

Ottawa volleyball wins

Ottawa — The Ottawa University volleyball squad won the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Bethel. Ottawa next will travel to Dordt (Iowa) College for the NAIA Region Four tournament.

OU football rallies

Ottawa — The Ottawa University football squad rallied for a 23-15 victory over McPherson on Saturday at Cook Field in its season finale. After McPherson had built a 15-point lead, the Braves woke up. A safety and a Kevin Mikeska touchdown run started the OU scoring. Ottawa finished its season 3-7.
