Check your Pulse

Wondering what happened to your newspaper?

Telling stories about the trends, issues and happenings that influence reader’s lives requires a newspaper that’s flexible.

So today we launch Pulse, a daily section built not around rigid topics but a sense of spontaneity that caters to you and how you lead your life. It’s organized to help you find what you need more quickly and easily.

We haven’t thrown out the features you love. Although these pages no longer have names like Living, Food or Scene, the familiar topics will remain. But when a movie opens on Wednesday, for instance, we can tell you about it then instead of waiting two days to put it in the Scene section.

Easy-to-read labels at the top of each Pulse front announce some of the topics in that day’s section. A column down the side or across the bottom of the page offers ways to spend your time and directs you to stories you won’t want to miss inside the section — or in the days ahead.

Pulse becomes the permanent home for favorites that used to float around the newspaper, such as comics, puzzles and horoscopes. No more digging through the paper looking for reviews of performances. They will always be in this section, most often on Marquee, the arts and entertainment page.

You can expect the following topics and regular features on certain days of the week:

  • Sunday: Arts, books, health, Behind the Lens, Pet Post, local columnists
  • Monday: People
  • Tuesday: 18 & Under
  • Wednesday: Food
  • Thursday: Home & Garden, antiques
  • Friday: Movies, music, weekend calendar
  • Saturday: Faith and values

The revamped features section coincides with style changes throughout the paper intended to make headlines easier to read, stories easier to find and pages more clean and crisp. If you have comments or suggestions about any of the changes, we want to hear from you. Reach us by using the phone numbers and e-mail addresses on this page.
