It's great to hear that the financial picture of the Douglas County Historical Society has taken a turn for the better.
By increasing its income and decreasing its expenses, the society, which operates the Watkins Community Museum of History, has recorded a net budget gain of more than $16,000. That's pretty good news for the society, which had projected a $36,000 deficit for the year. Financial figures were released last week during the society's annual meeting.
The financial gains speak well for the leadership provided by the society's board and by the museum's new director, Rebecca Phipps. The museum had been through some contentious and difficult times in the last several years, and it's wonderful to see a positive turn of events.
New programs, exhibits and tours are in the works for 2005, and historical society members are looking to the future with the hope of having additional space to display more of the museum's collection.
The first step to realizing that dream is to get the museum back on a firm financial footing. Congratulations to the staff and board for turning the museum in that direction.
