? Mass of Christian Burial for Carlyle H. Smith, 92, Pittsburg, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at his home after a short illness.

He was born Aug. 4, 1912, in Torrington, Conn., the son of James C. and Mabel A. Dougal Smith. He graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1931.

Mr. Smith worked for public schools in Providence, R.I., in the 1930s and for Princeton, N.J., public schools in the 1940s. He was a professor of silversmithing at Kansas University from 1947 to 1977. He made the chancellor’s collar and mace for Kansas University. He has several pieces in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. He was a recipient of the Kansas Governors Award in 1995.

He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and a former member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. He also was a member of Pittsburg Arts and Crafts Assn. and American Legion.

Mr. Smith married Isabelle M. Reilly on Aug. 10, 1939, in Providence. She died Aug. 15, 2002.

A son, Carl Smith Jr., also died earlier.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Layden, Pittsburg; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg.
