Dell meets targets
Dell Inc. said its profit surged 25 percent in the third quarter as the world's largest personal computer maker attributed record sales to rising technology spending in the corporate and government sectors in the United States and abroad.
Dell said Thursday that it earned $846 million, or 33 cents a share, compared with $677 million, or 26 cents a share, a year earlier. The results matched company and analysts' forecasts.

Intel turns inside for CEO
Despite a recent series of product missteps, Intel Corp.'s board on Thursday selected the semiconductor giant's day-to-day operations chief to replace Craig Barrett, chief executive officer, who is stepping aside to become chairman in May.
Paul Otellini, a 30-year Intel veteran who oversaw the Pentium microprocessor's launch in the 1990s, has been president and chief operating officer since 2002.

Sales, profits heat up for casual clothiers
Two casual-clothing chains reported sharply higher third-quarter profits Thursday, citing surging sales.
American Eagle Outfitters Inc. said earnings for its latest quarter rose more than fivefold and raised its fourth-quarter earnings estimates. The company has a store in downtown Lawrence and distribution center in Ottawa.
Meanwhile, Urban Outfitters said that its profit jumped 85 percent, helped by "outstanding results" in all the company's brands and distribution channels. Urban Outfitters has a store in downtown Lawrence.
