Silver Dollar City announces plans for new roller coaster

? How’s this for fun?

Get blasted out of an exploding black powder mill and then fly through a series of climbs, drops and spirals at speeds up to 64 mph, followed by a 110-foot drop.

Silver Dollar City officials are hoping you think that sounds like a great time. The theme park on Saturday unveiled plans for a new ride next season called the Powder Keg, a $10 million compressed air-launch roller coaster.

“It will thrust passengers from 0 to 53 mph in 2.8 seconds,” said Brad Thomas, Silver Dollar City general manager. That initial explosion of speed will take riders up a steep incline, followed by the 110-foot drop, he said. “So you’ll be dropping 11 stories.”

The ride along the 3,506-foot track will last just under three minutes, Thomas said, with a top speed of 64 mph. At several points along the way, riders will experience negative “G” or gravitational forces, causing a feeling of weightlessness.

The roller coaster is the first major capital investment in the park since 2001, when the $14 million coaster, WildFire, was added, said Mike Hutcherson, senior vice president of Silver Dollar City Attractions.

Market research helped give park officials a picture of what visitors wanted, Thomas said.

“Much of our research has driven what you see in Silver Dollar City today,” Thomas said. One thing was abundantly clear — “Moms, kids, everyone, truly loves roller coasters.”
