Wichita ? The Mid-America All-Indian Center has taken another step toward improving its operations with the restoration of its nonprofit status by the state.

The center, which provides social services and referrals for American Indians and programs for the city, had its nonprofit status revoked in December 2003 after failing to file annual reports for two years.

“They are active and back in good standing,” Jesse Borjon, communications director with the Kansas secretary of state’s office, said Friday.

The reinstatement Friday came two days after the state received the center’s request for reinstatement as well as two past annual reports, Borjon said. Being a nonprofit makes it easier to raise money because the contributions are tax deductible.

The Wichita Police Department and the FBI are investigating the center’s finances after an unknown amount of money from the center’s general fund was discovered missing.

The Indian Center opened about 24 years ago along the Arkansas River near downtown.
