Private inurnment for Anthony J. Smith, 88, Lawrence, will be in Pioneer Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at his home.
He was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Cincinnati, the son of Anthony J. and Gladys Smith. He received his A.B. degree in 1939 and his Ph.D. in 1945, both from the University of California, Los Angeles. He had lived in Lawrence almost 60 years.
Mr. Smith was a lecturer at the University of Minnesota from 1944 to 1945 and an instructor at the University of Illinois from 1945 to 1946.
He came to Kansas University as an assistant professor in 1946, became associate professor in 1951 and professor in 1954. He was chairman of KU's Department of Psychology from 1953 to 1962 and 1966 to 1969, and director of its graduate program in social psychology from 1963 to 1966.
He was a visiting assistant professor in 1947 at UCLA and visiting professor in 1970 at Tel Aviv University in Israel. He had a fellowship from 1962 to 1963 at the Tavistock Clinic in London.
Mr. Smith was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Psychological Assn., International Association of Applied Psychology, Midwestern Psychological Assn., Southwestern Psychological Assn., Sigma Xi, American Association for the Advancement of Science and Kansas Academy of Science.
He was a member of Kansas Psychological Assn., serving as president from 1955 to 1956, and Kansas State Board of Examiners, serving as vice chairman from 1967 to 1968.
He married Barbara Garrison in 1939. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Carol Shahin, Westwood, Calif., and Laurel Healy, Sarasota, Fla.; a son Eric, Lawrence; and four grandchildren.
