A poet who included poems from Lawrence students in his recently published anthology will visit the city this week.

Sandy Lyne will spend Monday through Friday working with Lawrence public school students. He also will conduct workshops for teachers.

“In elementary school we have to teach everything, and we don’t always get to be an expert on one thing,” said Barb Thompson, a sixth-grade teacher at Quail Run School. “We get the benefit of his multitude of experience and expertise.”

Lyne worked with Lawrence public school students during visits from 1994 to 1998, said Ann Bruemmer, the district’s director of arts and humanities.

Lyne’s poet residency is sponsored by Adventures in Imagination, a partnership between US Bank, Lawrence public schools and the Lied Center.

He will work this week with students from three elementary schools and Lawrence High School.

His anthology “Soft Hay Will Catch You,” which came out in the spring, includes poems from Lawrence students.

Some of the 26 sixth-graders Lyne will work with at Quail Run come from Thompson’s class. Thompson said she was excited that some of her students could learn from a man.

A male Kansas University student taught poetry to her students over several weeks earlier this fall.

“All the boys in the class, when he would recite his poetry and talk about his passion for poetry — they all thought it was really cool to be writers and poets,” Thompson said. “Usually they think it’s a girl thing.”

“It just makes them realize that it’s OK to be sensitive and poetic even though you’re a boy.”
