Rep. Ryun files for re-election

? U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, a Republican from Jefferson County, filed Monday for re-election voicing support for President Bush’s policies in Iraq and on the economy.

“I don’t feel like my work has been completed. There is still much to do,” said Ryun, who is seeking a fifth term to represent the 2nd Congressional District, which includes western Lawrence.

Ryun said he wanted to make permanent several tax cuts that are set to expire in January. The cuts pushed by Bush, he said, are starting to rev the economy.

“As more and more people have more money in their pockets, instead of the federal government having it, then you have more of an opportunity for growth economically, and I believe that’s what we are seeing,” Ryun said.

Ryun, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said Bush was moving in the right direction in the war in Iraq.

“I believe we are,” Ryun said. “If you don’t take the war to the terrorists, the terrorists will bring the war to you.”

Recent revelations of U.S. troops abusing Iraqi prisoners represent the deeds of a few soldiers who will be punished, Ryun said, and are not indicative of problems higher up the chain of command.

Ryun has had relatively easy political contests since he was first elected in 1996. So far, Ryun faces no Republican opposition in the Aug. 3 primary. Nancy Boyda, a Democrat from Topeka, has filed to challenge him in the Nov. 2 general election.

Ryun said he was planning for a tough campaign.

“The only way to run a race, whether it’s a foot race or a political race, is to run it very, very hard,” he said.
