Sox, Twins tied for first

Lee knocks in six runs as Chicago rolls, 17-7

? The Chicago White Sox punctuated a successful trip to Minnesota with a rout on Sunday.

Carlos Lee had four hits and drove in six runs, and Miguel Olivo and Juan Uribe hit consecutive homers in an eight-run fourth inning to lead the Sox over the Twins, 17-7.

“To come to Minnesota and play the way we did, it’s just fun leaving this town,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Aaron Rowand also had four hits, including a three-run homer, and scored four times for Chicago, which took three of four in the series to move into a tie with the Twins for first place in the AL Central. The White Sox scored 35 runs in their three wins.

Uribe, Magglio Ordonez and Olivo each had three hits, and every starter had at least one hit for the White Sox, who set season highs for run scored and hits (23) and batted around twice.

“When you have the type of offense we have, you are going to score some runs,” Guillen said.

Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire contemplated the football-like score and joked that the Twins could have used some help from their Metrodome co-tenants.

“I looked up and was hoping (Vikings quarterback Duante) Culpepper could throw a TD and get us back in it,” he said.

Jon Garland (4-2) gave up six runs in the first three innings before settling into a groove, limiting the Twins to three singles over the next four innings.

He gave up 10 hits in seven innings, walked two and struck out three.

Chicago's Carlos Lee tags a single in the fifth inning against Minnesota. Lee had four hits in five at-bats and knocked in six runs as the White Sox won, 17-7, Sunday in Minneapolis.

“The way I look at it, this makes up for the 1-0 loss (May 13 against Baltimore),” Garland said.

The White Sox scored three runs in the first off Johan Santana (2-2). Ordonez’s two-run triple gave Chicago the early lead, and Lee added an RBI single to make it 3-0.

“I expect Carlos Lee to do the same thing every day,” Guillen said. “I’m not worried about Carlos.”

The Twins answered with four runs in the bottom of half, highlighted by Doug Mientkiewicz’s two-run base hit up the middle.

Cristian Guzman executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt scoring Alex Prieto in the second, and the Twins made it 6-3 on a grounder by Cuddyer in the third.

But the White Sox rallied in the fourth. Olivo opened the inning with a long homer to straight-away center field, and Uribe followed with a liner over the left-field wall. Lee gave the White Sox the lead for good with a two-run single as the first eight batters in the inning reached base. Olivo also had a single in the inning.

Santana was removed after allowing the fourth straight hit to start the inning — a single by Ordonez.

He allowed seven runs and 10 hits in three-plus innings.

Yankees 8, Rangers 3

Arlington, Texas — Enrique Wilson homered and drove in three runs and helped New York avoid a three-game sweep in Alex Rodriguez’s return to Arlington.

Javier Vazquez (4-4) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a single, double and two strikeouts and extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 32, the longest in the majors this season.

Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 2

Boston — David Ortiz had three hits and three RBIs, and Tim Wakefield pitched seven solid innings. The win was the seventh in nine games for the Sox, who jumped to a 6-0 lead after three innings. Toronto has lost five straight on the road and is 8-14 away from SkyDome.

Devil Rays 5,

Indians 4, 10 innings

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Tino Martinez’s bases-loaded single in the 10th inning gave Tampa Bay a victory over Cleveland and its first four-game winning streak this season.

Rocco Baldelli hit a one-out double off David Riske (0-2). After Aubrey Huff was intentionally walked and Jose Cruz Jr. walked to load the bases, Martinez lined a single to right on a 1-2 pitch.

Toby Hall hit a home run, and Travis Harper (1-0) threw three scoreless innings.

Alex Escobar homered for the Indians, who have lost five straight.

Mariners 3, Tigers 1

Seattle — Freddy Garcia pitched seven innings, and John Olerud hit a solo home run to lead the Mariners.

Olerud led off the seventh with a shot into the Detroit bullpen on a 1-0 pitch from Jeremy Bonderman (4-3). Raul Ibanez drove in two runs, and the Mariners won for only the third time in their last 14 games.

Garcia (2-3) was steady, though, holding the Tigers to four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. He became the third Seattle starter with two wins and lowered his ERA to 2.71, second-best in the American League.

Seattle avoided a sweep of the three-game series after the Tigers won the first two.

Angels 8, Orioles 3

Anaheim, Calif. — Vladimir Guerrero homered, Jose Guillen hit a three-run double, and the Angels completed a three-game sweep.

Aaron Sele (3-0) allowed three runs — two earned — and six hits through five innings. The sweep was the Angels’ fifth this season of at least three games, and they have the best record in baseball at 29-15, tying the best start in franchise history and lead the AL West by 31/2 games. Daniel Cabrera (2-1) was charged with six runs, nine hits and three walks in four innings, and Baltimore lost its fourth straight.
