Man charged with drunken driving in injury accident

A driver with three prior drunken driving convictions has been charged with hitting a pedestrian with an SUV Monday night while driving drunk.

Prosecutors this afternoon charged Jeffrey D. Carlson, 31, Lawrence, with offenses that include a fourth-time DUI charge, a charge for aggravated battery and a charge of leaving the scene of an accident. He was in the Douglas County Jail this afternoon with bond set at $50, 000.

The wreck happened shortly before 10 p.m. Monday in the 1500 block of West 23rd Street. The victim, 22-year-old Natasha Gilbert of Lawrence, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

A prosecutor said Gilbert suffered head injuries, but she was treated at the hospital without being admitted.
