Dignitaries attend commemorative events

? Visits by President Bush and presumed Democratic presidential nominee U.S. Sen. John Kerry capped a three-day celebration of events surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling.

Those who attended the opening of the National Historic Site at the refurbished Monroe Elementary School included President Bush, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Education Secretary Rod Paige and Interior Secretary Gale Norton.

Also attending were U.S. Sens. Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts; Gov. Kathleen Sebelius; U.S. Reps. Jim Ryun, Dennis Moore, Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran, all of Kansas; U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland; former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Jack Kemp; and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a major figure in the civil rights struggle, was the featured speaker.
