Rain to last through evening

Damp and cool conditions greeted Kansas University students today on their last day of classes for the semester, as a cold front brought in scattered showers and temperatures in the 50s to the Lawrence area.

“From the thunderstorms last night through about 3 p.m. today, we had 1.41 inches,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist. “We got more of our much-needed rainfall.”

The chance for rain will continue through tonight.

“After 7 p.m., we’ll have some scattered showers and isolated rumbles of thunder,” Sayers said.

Today’s temperatures fell through the afternoon dropping to 54 by 3 p.m. Although areas west of Concordia have been issued a frost advisory overnight, the temperature won’t drop lower than 44 by early Friday morning in the Lawrence area, thanks to lingering cloud cover, Sayers said.

“It might sprinkle here and there,” Sayers said. “By late (Friday) morning or early afternoon, we’re going to have a lot of sunshine.”

Friday’s afternoon high will be 64 under mostly sunny skies.

“It will be a little cool out there, but it will be refreshing with the sun in the early afternoon,” Sayers said.

Saturday will be mostly sunny, starting out cool at 41, he said. But with some sunshine and southerly winds, we’ll end up at 74 degrees, he said.

There’s a slight chance of rain Sunday, but not until in the very late afternoon and early evening, Sayers said. He predicted dry weather for Sunday afternoon’s outdoor graduation ceremonies for Free State High School (1 p.m.) and for Lawrence High School (4 p.m.). Both are at KU’s Memorial Stadium.

“I think they’ll be OK,” Sayers said. “Rain chances are after dinner.”
