Stormy weather expected tonight

Scattered storms are headed toward the Lawrence area, including some late-night ones that could be severe.

“From 6 to 10 (p.m.), some storms will be popping up toward the west and heading in our direction,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist. “There’s a slight chance for some of those being severe. Winds and hail would be the main threat.”

A burst of rain passed through the Lawrence area between 10:30 a.m. and noon today, leaving behind .05 of an inch, Sayers said.

“It was heavy, but it was brief,” Sayers said.

Sayers said the greatest chance for severe weather will come overnight, with the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

“Then we’ll have off-and-on scattered thundershowers through Thursday,” Sayers said. Although there were earlier predictions that northeast Kansas might see as much as 3 inches of rain, he didn’t think Lawrence would get that much of a soaking.

“I think we’ll be more in the one-and-a-half- to two-inch range when it’s all said and done by tomorrow night,” he said.

The cold front moving in from the west will cool off the area. Thursday’s morning low will be 62, with the high reaching 67 on Thursday night.

“By rush hour Friday morning, the rains will be on the Missouri side of the state line,” he said. “Friday will have a cool start, at 43 degrees, with 68 for the high. But it will be pleasant, with sunny skies in the afternoon.”

Drier conditions return for the weekend.

Saturday’s morning low will be 46, reaching a high of 70. Sunday will be a little warmer, with the morning low starting at 53, reaching a high of 81 by the afternoon.
