Charles Dorssom has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala.

At OTS, cadets undergo a demanding 12-week course that trains them to be top quality Air Force officers through an extensive curriculum comprised of classroom work, lectures and exercises to develop leadership, team building and officer skills. Cadets receive instruction in military training, defense studies, leadership studies and management, communication skills and field training exercises.

Dorssom is a weather officer assigned to the 25th Operational Weather Squadron at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz. He is the son of James and Martha Dorssom, Lecompton. His wife, Ashley, is the daughter of Daryl and Ellen Mellard, Perry. The lieutenant graduated in 1997 from Perry-Lecompton High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 2003 from Kansas University.

  • Air National Guard Tech. Sgt. Joseph E. Copeland has deployed overseas to a forward operating location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Operation Iraqi Freedom is the official name given to military operations involving U.S. and coalition forces efforts to disarm and end the current Iraqi regime.

Copeland is a firefighter with 18 years of military service. Copeland, a 1985 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School, is the son of Charles and Barbara Copeland, Perry.

  • Lt. Cmdr. Craig Joy, Norfolk, Va., retired from the U.S. Navy during a ceremony April 23 in Norfolk, Va. Joy, a 1984 Kansas University graduate, was commissioned as an Ensign on May 14,1984, from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp. at KU. He is the son of Maurice and Betsy Joy, Lawrence.
