Orioles put Segui on DL, call outfielder McDonald

Cleveland — The Baltimore Orioles placed designated hitter David Segui on the 15-day disabled list Friday and recalled outfielder Darnell McDonald from Triple-A Ottawa. Segui’s move was retroactive to Sunday.

Segui, who has an inflamed left knee, was batting .298 with one home run and seven RBIs in 13 games.

Cubs promote Rusch, send Wuertz to minors

St. Louis — The Chicago Cubs on Friday purchased the contract of veteran left-hander Glendon Rusch from Triple-A Iowa. Rusch signed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent on April 1 after spending the majority of spring training with the Texas Rangers.

To make room for Rusch, the Cubs sent Michael Wuertz to Iowa.

Drug testing planned for Dominican League

New York — Major League Baseball will begin a drug testing program for the Dominican Summer League, checking players for steroids and other banned substances this year.

The Dominican league is made up mostly of 17- and 18-year-old prospects.

“To achieve our goal of zero tolerance of performance-enhancing substances and drugs of abuse, it is important to prevent the use of these substances in the earliest stages of a player’s career,” commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement.
