Ibanez blast denies Detroit, 3-1

Seattle slugger belts 11th career home run against Tigers in 10th inning

? Raul Ibanez doesn’t know why he’s had so much success against the Tigers.

Ibanez hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to give Seattle a 3-1 victory over Detroit on Friday night. It was his 11th career home run against the Tigers, three more than he has hit against any other team.

“I can’t explain it. It doesn’t even feel like I’ve had that kind of luck against them,” he said. “Look at tonight — I hadn’t done a thing until I finally got the barrel of the bat on that last pitch.”

Scott Spiezio led off the 10th with a single off Al Levine (2-1), and after Bret Boone popped out, Ibanez hit a fly that landed just over the left-field fence. It was his fifth homer of the season.

“It seems like every homer that Raul hits is a big one for us,” Seattle manager Bob Melvin said. “He’s done it a lot this year, that’s for sure.”

Tigers manager Alan Trammell saw plenty of Ibanez last season, when he hit .361 against Detroit as a member of the Kansas City Royals.

“That’s probably why Seattle picked him up,” he said. “I was talking to Bob Melvin today, and they’ve struggled offensively this year. Raul came up with a big hit today.”

Eddie Guardado pitched a perfect 10th for his fourth save. Former Tiger Mike Myers (1-1) got the final two outs of the ninth to pick up the win.

Seattle won for just the second time in nine games. Detroit has lost four of five, but finished the month 12-11 for its first winning record in April since 1993.

“We really needed this one,” Melvin said. “This is how we win games — good pitching and good defense and a few big hits.”

Indians 11, Orioles 2

Cleveland — Travis Hafner had four RBIs, and Cliff Lee’s strong start helped relieve a struggling bullpen.

Lee (3-0) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings while giving most of the Indians’ relievers another day to rest. He walked four and struck out five.

Cleveland’s frazzled bullpen gave up five runs in the ninth on Wednesday.

Omar Vizquel added a two-run double in the second off Baltimore starter Sidney Ponson (2-2), and the Indians built a 7-1 lead after four innings.

Ponson was tagged for six earned runs and nine hits in 32/3 innings.

Athletics 4, Devil Rays 2

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Erubiel Durazo hit a pair of two-run homers to help Oakland snap a six-game losing streak.

Durazo homered in the fifth and seventh innings for the Athletics, who were coming off sweeps by Anaheim and New York. It was Durazo’s eighth multihomer game.

Mark Redman (2-1) allowed just four singles in 62/3 innings. The left-hander had stretches where he retired nine and eight in a row.

Doug Waechter (1-1) retired his first 13 batters, but was ejected after 62/3 innings when he hit Bobby Crosby following Durazo’s second home run.

Tampa Bay’s Rocco Baldelli and Aubrey Huff hit consecutive homers in the ninth.

Jose Cruz Jr. fell to 0-for-34 when he flew out as pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Twins 6, Angels 3

Minneapolis — Carlos Silva allowed two earned runs in 71/3 innings to lift Minnesota to its 12th win in 15 games.

Silva (4-0), acquired in an offseason trade that sent Eric Milton to the Philadelphia Phillies, allowed seven hits in the longest outing of his career.

Corey Koskie hit his fifth homer for the Twins, while Shannon Stewart and Cristian Guzman each had three hits.

Joe Nathan put runners on first and third with one out in the ninth, but got Troy Glaus to ground into a double play for his seventh save.

The Twins scored six times against Angels starter Ramon Ortiz (1-3).
