Douglas County Family and Community Education in cooperation with K-State Research & Extension Family and Consumer Sciences is offering a program “Celebrating Local Foods” at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2110 Harper St.

The program will be given by Nancy O’Connor, director of education and outreach at the Community Mercantile Co-op. O’Connor will explain how supporting local producers strengthens the local economy while providing the freshest products to consumers. The presentation will include a cooking demonstration of several recipes featuring local ingredients. To register, call the Extension Office at 843-7058. The program is free and open to the public.

  • Stull Family and Community Education will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Stull United Methodist Brethern Church. The lesson will be “Antimicrobial Resistance and the Food Supply.”
  • The Meadowlark 4-H Club met April 13 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Taj Heckler presided over the meeting. Members answered roll call by naming their favorite flower. The club discussed making a banner for the Douglas County Free Fair, which will be July 25-Aug. 1. The members received a thank-you note for helping at the Lawn and Garden Show and recognition from the Douglas County Meals on Wheels program. It was announced that today is the deadline for making changes on enrollment cards. Reagan Hikes and Erin Ashcraft gave a talk about the upcoming county camp at Rock Springs. Derby Miller and Justin Fox gave a presentation about foods.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 11 at the fairgrounds. Before the meeting, there will be a pizza party and members will make tray favors for the Meals on Wheels program.
