Car accident causes power blackout

A car struck a bus shelter and utility pole Tuesday night, knocking out electricity for several blocks in the area of Haskell Avenue and La Salle Street.

Lawrence Police and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical crews responded shortly after 9 p.m. One person was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Fire Division Chief Rob Kort said.

Power was knocked out to about 900 Westar Energy customers, spokeswoman Karla Olsen said. By 10:05 p.m. power had been restored to all but about 100 customers, she said.
