Tornado hits S.W. Kansas

Twister causes damage to buildings near Kinsley

? A tornado Saturday in southwestern Kansas caused damage along a 10-mile stretch.

The tornado touched down five miles northwest of Kinsley and caused damage in Edwards and Pawnee counties, the National Weather Service said.

Meteorologist Larry Ruthi, of the Weather Service’s Dodge City office, said the tornado destroyed five equipment buildings at one farm and lifted a house off its foundations. Elsewhere, a stock trailer was blown for three-quarters of a mile and an oil tank was rolled three-tenths of a mile from its base. No injuries were reported.

The Weather Service also reported that a tornado touched down briefly in Barton County, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

There were also reports of hail across Kansas. The largest reported hailstone, in Edwards County, was nearly 3 inches in diameter.

High winds near Cuba, Kan., blew a 300-gallon fuel tank on top of a car in Republican County.

A cold front was expected to push strong to severe thunderstorms across the Great Plains region Saturday night. Flood watches were posted for northeastern Kansas, including Lawrence.

Temperatures in the 50- and 60-degree range were forecast for today, with a slight chance of thunderstorms for the afternoon.
