Centenary United Methodist Church

A service of Tenebrae will be 7 p.m. April 8 in the sanctuary of Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St.

The service will feature music of the chancel choir under the direction of Emily Chaney; narrative and Scripture readings; and Holy Communion. The public is welcome.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

Missionaries Denise and Kerry Godwin will share their experiences during the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

Laura Petrie will lead the “Purpose Driven Life” study at 7 p.m. Monday and at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Women’s ministries will have a special event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Pam Barber, of Ellsworth, will be the speaker.

Clinton Parkway will share in a “Jesus in the Passover Seder” event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 10 in the church’s activity center.

Jeffrey Miller, a Messianic Jewish evangelist, will lead participants through a presentation of this traditional Jewish feast. It will be a seder, including a full meal. Tickets cost $5 per person.

Cornerstone Foundation

Sonia Choquette, a practicing psychic, spiritual teacher and best-selling author, will speak on the topic “Trust Your Vibes — Direct Contact with the Divine” at a 10:30 a.m. service May 2, and a workshop from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. that same day, both at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th St.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

Adoration will be from 7:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St. A communal reconciliation service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Stations of the Cross will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Holy Hour Adoration from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp.

East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp. has announced a new location for the ECKAN Douglas County Center.

It is at 1 Riverfront Plaza in downtown Lawrence. The telephone number will remain 841-3357.

ECKAN will be closed through Friday. The new center will open Monday. Hours will remain the same, from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

First Christian Church

A special event, “Becoming a Christian is Kid Stuff,” will be at noon Sunday at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky. This will be a fun and informational time with the Rev. Randy Beeman, senior pastor. Lunch will be served.

Palm Sunday will be observed at 8:55 a.m. April 4 in the sanctuary. There will be a special musical presentation featuring piano, organ, handbells and the chancel choir.

Holy Week services will be at noon April 5-9 at the church. Several Lawrence churches will jointly share the Holy Week message. Lunch will be served following the services April 5-8 in First Christian’s fellowship hall. A community ecumenical Tenebrae service will be at noon April 9; no lunch will be served that day.

First Presbyterian Church

The 6 p.m. Lenten series will conclude Wednesday, with a discussion on “Giving to God” led by Jeff and Mary Margaret Morrison in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway. The series focuses on the “Six Marks of Discipleship.”

The church will have a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon April 3. Items for sale include: clothing for all ages, toys, shoes, books, craft items, sewing supplies, electronics, home decor, household items and small appliances.

Proceeds will fund Presbyterian Women mission projects.

First United Methodist Church

The Lenten Communion services continue at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. Greg Hildenbrand will provide special music for this week.

Lawrence Habitat for Humanity’s fund-raiser, “Swingtime and Coffee,” will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in Brady Hall. Clyde Bysom and the 20-piece band Jazzhaus, as well as Don Mueller and his singing group Attune, will perform. No tickets are required, but contributions will be received.

Summer Camp Chipewa registration forms are due soon. For those who are in kindergarten through high school and wish to enroll in the camp of their choice, registration forms are available in the church office. Discounts are given for registrations received by Thursday.

Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center

A Lenten workshop of crafts and activities for children will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church & University Student Center, 15th and Iowa streets.

A Lenten service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The theme is “The Bethany Road,” the sixth in a series titled “This Lenten Road.”

A Christian book fair will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 3 in the narthex of the church. More than 170 titles of children’s early readers, activity books, adult fiction, Christian parenting/family books and videos will be available. Two parenting education workshops also will be offered, focusing on activities that parents can do with children. Free resource material will be provided.

Proceeds will benefit Immanuel’s library and Sunday school program.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

“Christ in the Passover,” a Jews for Jesus presentation, will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive.

Participants will explore what the Jewish Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper have in common.

The event will enhance the appreciation and understanding of the Jewish background of the Christian Communion. Ancient and modern Jewish customs will be discussed and described with an emphasis on the aspect of redemption that Christ accomplished at Calvary.

The event is open to the public.

Cliff and Julia Pash will report on their Africa ministry trip at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

Chili will be served at the seniors group meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave.

The Rev. John Hopkins of Calvary Lutheran Church in Topeka will conduct divine services with Holy Communion at 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

A spring bake sale is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon April 3.

Confirmands will be examined at 4 p.m. April 3, and confirmation will be at the 8:30 a.m. April 4 (Palm Sunday) service.

The church’s annual Easter hunt is scheduled for April 10.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Monica’s Children is a new prayer group for parents who will meet to spend time in prayer support for one another in lifting up their children to God.

The prayer group, named for St. Monica, who spent time praying for her son, Augustine, will meet from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. the first Thursday of each month, beginning Thursday in the church.

This hour of prayer will begin with a litany and prayer of intercession to St. Monica, followed by the rosary, time for quiet prayer and a benediction.

This group is for parents who wish to pray for the health, well being, protection, conversion, or whatever intention parents might have for their children.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

Sunday’s theme is “God Is Planning Your Success” at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Eagle Scouts Gary Gardner and John Armstrong will be honored at the 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday services.

“Pasta with the Pastors,” an opportunity for those wishing to learn more about the church, will follow the 10:45 a.m. Sunday service.

Youth group will have a “Dinner Out” after the 5:30 p.m. Sunday service.

Two new groups begin this week: a Monday group that will focus on the topic “Jesus Up Close and Personal,” and a Tuesday group that will focus on the topic “Moral Compass.”

Trinity Episcopal Church

The Rev. William Beers, a representative from Food for the Poor, will present the 9:30 a.m. Sunday adult forum at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt. The youth group will travel to Jamaica under the auspices of Food for the Poor this summer. The forum is in the parish hall.

The Lenten study on the book “Opening the Bible,” led by the Rev. Jonathon Jensen, continues from 5:05 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Wednesday in the Matthews Center.

A mixed group of youth and adults has begun reading the Bible in one year. Using “The One Year Bible,” the study group is led by youth director Zane Wilemon at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., preceding the group.

Deacon Carolyn Graham’s Lenten study group continues from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Fridays in the church library. The group is using the book “Speaking of Sin: The Lost Language of Salvation,” by the Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The final session of the Lutheran House of studies on “Engaging the New Testament,” with the Rev. Susan Candea, will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

The adult forum “Spirituality@Work” also wraps up at 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

The fifth and final week of the series of Lenten suppers and dialogue on integrating spirituality and the workplace will be Wednesday. Donations at the meal, which starts at 6 p.m. and is coordinated by the social concerns team, will benefit Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. Jean Lilley, executive director of the organization, will be the guest.

After the meal, the dialogue begins at 6:40 p.m., with evening prayer in the chapel at 7 p.m. First Communion training meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Training session for new Stephen Ministers is at 7 p.m. Thursday in the social room. Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will have its monthly coordinating council meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Interfaith Caring Neighbors board meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the library.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “A Glimpse of Heaven,” will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

A program, “Why I Am a Unitarian,” will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by coffee and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

University Community of Christ

“Live Christ’s Way!” is the theme for World Conference, scheduled for Saturday through April 4 at the Community of Christ World Headquarters in Independence, Mo.

Several members of University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive, will participate in the conference as delegates: Leon Curtis, Jeff Curtis and Steve, Luke and Anna Zahniser.

Alice Norris will lead the adult class as it continues to work from the “Power & Light” study series at the church. The lesson this week focuses on “Prayerful Life.”

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

The Rev. Nate Rovenstine will resume the “Sermon on the Mount” series Sunday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway. The title is “Retaliation and the Kingdom.”

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Patricia Slider will present the third and last in the series “Who Do You Say That I Am?” and examine “Modern Heresies” at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

The Sunday evening lesson six in the Lenten study “The Common People Heard Him Gladly” will be examined at 5:30 p.m., preceded by a snack at 5:15 p.m.

Men’s group will meet for lunch Thursday at Plum Tree Restaurant.

April 3 has been designated “Work Day,” beginning at 9 a.m. Those who cannot attend are encouraged to sign up for a chore and do it at their convenience.
