Steve and Kristen Craven, Pueblo West, Colo., announce the birth of a son, Nathan Matthew Craven, born March 18, 2004, at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colo. He has a brother, Joel Craven, 4. Maternal grandparents are Susan and Phil McClintic, Lawrence; and Brad Smith, Los Angeles. Paternal grandparents are Robert and Carol Craven, St. Charles, Mo. Great-grandparents are Clara Jones, Lawrence, and Ina Ruth Craven, Carrollton, Mo.

  • Jenna Collins, a senior at Lawrence High School, has been named this year’s Harter Scholar at Baker University. She will receive full tuition for four years at Baker and spend a summer studying abroad at Harlaxton College in England. Collins, who plans to major in engineering, is a National Merit Commended Scholar and has received top ratings at the high school state piano competition. She is the daughter of William and Annette Collins.

Eighteen students applied for this year’s Harter Scholarship, which goes to students with a grade-point average of at least 3.75 and an ACT score of at least 30.

  • Cameron Moore, Perry, made the fall 2003 semester dean’s list at Spring Arbor University, Spring Arbor, Mich., by receiving at least a 3.5 grade-point average.
  • Kristen Jordan, Luke Lackrone and Courtney Luthye, all of Lawrence, were named High Scholars at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. They will be honored for outstanding academic achievement during a ceremony Sunday on campus.
  • Heather Miller, a Free State High School student, accepted an $800 Hays City Silver Academic Award and a $500 Award of Excellence in art from Fort Hays State University. Miller is involved in the National Art Honor Society and has received scholastic art awards. She is the daughter of Jeff and Taunya Miller, Lawrence.
  • Lake Forest College student Amy Armstrong, a Lawrence High School graduate, is studying abroad in Tanzania for the 2004 spring semester. The Tanzania program offers undergraduates an opportunity to conduct field work in some of the best paleoanthropological and ecological sites. She divides her time between the University of Dar es Salaam and the northern region of Tanzania. Students in the program take courses in Swahili, human evolution and the ecology of the Serengeti while spending six weeks in field camps developing and pursuing field projects.
  • Jason Perez and Jennifer Rhoads, both of Lawrence, were two of eight new members of the Lambda Pi Eta national communication honor society recently inducted into the Iota Kappa chapter at Washburn University. Perez and Rhoads are both seniors, majoring in communication.
