KU bowlers advance

? Kansas University’s men’s and women’s bowling teams both placed in the top four of their respective sectional tournaments Sunday and earned berths in the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships April 17 in Tulsa, Okla.

KU’s men finished second with a team score of 13,078. Vincennes led the 16-team field with a score of 13,375. Morehead College (12,746) and Purdue (12,716) also advanced.

KU’s women finished third with a total of 11,292. Pikeville College won at 11,795. Runner-up Morehead (11,680) and Ball State (11,059) also advanced. It was the second year in a row the KU women reached nationals and the fourth straight year for the men.

Preceding the two-day team tournament, the Jayhawks also fared well in Friday’s singles tournament. Kelly Zapf won the women’s event, and teammate Leanne Downey also qualified for the College Bowling USA tournament May 20 in Milwaukee. On the men’s side, KU’s Rhino Page was runner-up, and Dan Ahl was fourth.

Also during the weekend, KU’s Chris Dilley and Ojas Sampat were named Academic All-Americans.
