John Fries has been named a financial adviser with Eagle Strategies Corp., a registered investment adviser and subsidiary of New York Life Insurance Co. Fries provides financial planning and investment advisory services’ ranging from separately managed portfolios of stocks and bonds to mutual fund wrap accounts’ to clients in the Lawrence area.
His appointment with Eagle Strategies required that he satisfied educational requirements in financial planning, was appropriately licensed and had a good compliance record. Fries is a member of the Lawrence Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.

PDS Medical Inc., provider of home oxygen and medical equipment, has expanded and moved from its Sixth Street location to 2108 W. 27th St., Suite K. Dave Norton, owner and operator, has been a provider of home oxygen since 1981. He is joined by Peg Wessel, Ben Ubelaker, Kurt Meeks and Gregg Uhlrig.

Lenexa-based Field Force Media has appointed Paige Baraban, a Kansas University graduate, as vice president of marketing. Baraban will oversee new business development, client relations, media relations and marketing. She previously was in marketing for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The Kansas Cavalry seeks new members to help promote economic development in Kansas. Organized more than 30 years ago to spur economic development through private-sector support, the Kansas Cavalry is a group of volunteer business, education, and economic development professionals who use their knowledge and credentials to promote Kansas as a pro-business state.
The commanding general of Kansas Cavalry is Stephen Waite, president of Waiteco, El Dorado. Deputy commanding general is Kay Schallenkamp, president of Emporia State University. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius serves as commander-in-chief and Lt. Gov. John Moore is deputy commander-in-chief.

The Better Business Bureau of Northeast Kansas recently installed their 2004 officers for the board of directors. The new officers are: D.L. Smith, chairman, D.L. Smith Electrical Construction; Mark Wilkerson, vice chairman, IMA; Jack Huey, past chairperson, Capitol Federal Savings; James Blackburn, treasurer, Blackburn Nursery.

Dr. Vince Scholle, of Scholle Chiropractic, recently completed Phase I of “Functional Endocrinology: Balancing Women’s Hormones Safely.” The seminar dealt with the effects of estrogen dominance and the symptoms that it causes.

Topeka-based Capitol Federal Savings has donated $150,000 to the Boy Scouts of America — Heart of America Council. Through the gift, the new 800-seat campfire arena at Camp Naish in Bonner Springs will be named Capitol Federal Campfire Arena. Capitol Federal has operations in Lawrence.

In celebration of National Tourism Week, May 8-16, the Lawrence Convention & Visitors Bureau is looking to Lawrence photographers to capture the most enticing things about Lawrence.
The 2004 photo contest includes five categories: Lawrence: The City of the Arts; From Ashes to Immortality; The People of Lawrence; Let it Snow; and Sporting Lawrence. Photos may be black and white or color and must be no smaller than 4-by-6 inches and no larger than 8-by-10 inches. The Lawrence CVB staff will evaluate entries for originality, artistry and content.
Entry forms are available at the Lawrence CVB office, 734 Vt.; the Lawrence Visitor Information Center, 402 N. Second St.; the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.; and at attractions throughout Lawrence. Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. April 26.

Douglas County Bank will have a grand opening for its branch bank at West Sixth Street and Folks Road. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 3 and will include several prize giveaways.

The Kansas University Small Business Development Center is sponsoring two seminars in March.
“Business Succession and Estate Planning” will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at 734 Vt. Several local financial planning and accounting professionals will discuss succession and estate planning during the luncheon seminar. The cost is $15 and preregistration is required.
“Making Cents of Your Financial Statements” will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 30 at 734 Vt. The seminar will focus on the ins and outs of financial statements. The cost is $40 in advance and $50 at the door.

The Douglas County district of the Kansas State Nurses Assn. is sponsoring “Women: Making Changes in the Context of Their Lives” from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital basement. The cost varies from $25 to $5 depending on membership and employment.

Extension Services in Leavenworth, Douglas and Johnson counties are sponsoring the annual Hazardous Occupation Training or tractor safety course. The course will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. every Monday in April in De Soto. The training is required by law for those 14 and 15 years old who will be operating a tractor on a farm owned by anyone other than their parent or legal guardian. The Kansas Women’s Business Center is sponsoring a workshop “Financial Matters” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 1 at the center in Lenexa. A panel discussion will focus on how financial statements and how they can improve a business. The cost is $35.
The center also is having a networking event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 6 at the center. The cost is $15.
