Family members say toddler recovering after accident

Relatives of a 2-year-old boy hit by a vehicle Thursday on Kentucky Street are calling it amazing that the child wasn’t more seriously injured.

Although Logan Prothro was hit and swept under a Jeep Cherokee, family members said Friday that he was going to be fine.

The boy, from Bennington, was struck by the vehicle shortly before noon Thursday near 13th and Kentucky streets.

The child was flown by air ambulance to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where he is in serious condition.

The child’s aunt, Megan Prothro, said Logan suffered some internal bleeding, a broken leg and a slight concussion, but he was awake and talking.

“He doesn’t remember what happened; he just knows that he hurts,” Prothro said.

Police said the child was unresponsive at the scene. Witnesses described seeing a 2-year-old boy in a diaper lying motionless on the ground.

Logan was hit as he and his grandmother were getting out of their car parked along Kentucky Street. The two were on their way to lunch with Megan Prothro, who lives in the 1300 block of Kentucky Street. She witnessed the accident.

“They were waiting to get out of the car until the light on 14th Street turned red,” she said. “No cars were coming.”

Prothro said a car must have come around the corner. She said she thought her nephew was hit on his shoulder and then rolled under the Jeep.

Family members said they wrote a letter to the driver of the car, 23-year-old Kansas University student Jennifer Holland, who stopped immediately after the accident and was there when police arrived.

The family gave the letter to police to deliver to Holland. Prothro said her family did not blame Holland for the accident.

“I can’t imagine how I would feel if I hit someone’s baby,” Prothro said.

Police continue to investigate the accident.
