Wichita police officer kills man in partner’s defense

? A Wichita police officer shot and killed a man Thursday who had cornered the officer’s partner with a knife on an apartment stairwell.

Police said three officers responded to a burglary call at the Kingston Cove Apartments in South Wichita at 11:07 a.m. When they knocked on the door where the 911 call originated, a man in the apartment beckoned them to come in.

Police Chief Norman Williams said after officers opened the door, the man picked up a knife and came toward one of the officers.

“When the guy came toward him, the officer sprayed him with Mace, but it was ineffective,” the chief said. “The guy started charging him, making various sounds, yelling.”

When the officer became cornered on the stairwell, the backup officer fired several shots at the man, who died about an hour later at Via Christie Regional Medical Center.

Williams said the shooting victim, who is not being identified pending notification of his family, was in his 40s. He was the only one in the apartment when officers arrived.

The three officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigates the shooting.
