Wells, Magloire fined $5,000 apiece by league

New York — Memphis guard Bonzi Wells and New Orleans center Jamaal Magloire were fined $5,000 apiece by the NBA Thursday for throwing a basketball into the stands in separate games.

The fines were announced by Stu Jackson, the league’s senior vice president of basketball operations.

Wells tossed the ball into the stands during the third quarter of the Grizzlies’ 82-79 win over Philadelphia Tuesday in Memphis, Tenn. That night, Magloire did the same thing in the third period of Miami’s 96-83 home win over the Hornets.

Rockets sign Oakley to 10-day contract

Houston — Charles Oakley signed a 10-day contract Thursday with the Houston Rockets, giving coach Jeff Van Gundy another player from his New York Knicks days.

The 40-year-old power forward hasn’t played all season, but that did not deter Van Gundy.

“I know him; I trust him,” Van Gundy said. “He knows how hard you have to play to win in this league.”

Oakley started with Chicago, playing three years for the Bulls before his trade to the Knicks in 1988. He spent a decade with the Knicks, then was traded to Toronto.
