KU running back faces two court dates

Kansas University running back John Randle is becoming a familiar sight in Lawrence Municipal Court. The former Wichita Southeast standout will have two appearances in two separate cases in the next two months.

Randle, 19, is to appear April 30 on charges of disorderly conduct, interfering with a police officer’s duties and unlawful use of a driver’s license. Randle was arrested after an incident March 5 in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street.

On March 29, Randle is scheduled to be sentenced for attempted misdemeanor theft. He recently pleaded no contest to the charge after it was reduced from theft, municipal prosecutor Jerry Little said. A judge then found him guilty, Little said.

But Randle since has told Little that he intends to get an attorney to work with him on the theft case. The attorney might try to convince the judge to allow Randle to change his plea, Little said.

The theft charge was filed concerning the theft of some beer on Nov. 19 at a Lawrence convenience store that also involved KU kick returner Greg Heaggans, Little said.

In an attempt to avoid charges, Heaggans, 20, has entered a diversion program and has paid a $200 diversion fee and $32 in court costs. He must stay out of trouble for a year, Little said.

Randle also was arrested Nov. 2 on suspicion of domestic battery and criminal damage to property. Charges never were filed in connection with that incident.

Kansas coach Mark Mangino said after Wednesday’s spring practice it was unlikely the running back would be removed from the team, but he said there would be “consequences.”

“I will handle it in-house,” Mangino said. “But there will be consequences. John knows that. We’ve discussed it. We’ve discussed it with his family, and there will be consequences — no question.”

Mangino said he would not make a final decision on the matter until Randle’s court cases were resolved.

“Every citizen has the right to due process,” he said. “I’ll follow that very closely, but there are some training rules involved here and I’ll take care of that as I see fit as well.”
