Haskell trips Tabor

Despite trailing in both games of their doubleheader Tuesday, Haskell Indian Nations University softball players said they felt no need to score quickly.

But the Fightin’ Indians did so anyway, scoring so fast, in fact, that a big inning in each contest secured Haskell 9-1 and an 8-5 victories over Tabor College at Lady Indian Softball Field.

“We didn’t really feel like we had to get it done right now, like all at once,” said HINU’s Jamie Tanner, who scored four of HINU’s 17 runs Wednesday. “It’s quite a rush, though, when they do start coming all at once.”

HINU’s rampant runs in the fourth inning of the first game and second inning of the nightcap gave the Indians their first victories at home this season.

“It feels pretty darn good when you can win them like this at home,” said HINU coach Gary Tanner, whose team has won five of its last eight after starting the season 0-5. “We’re still a little bit on the underside on our record, but I think we’re starting to come around.”

In Game One, Haskell overcame Tabor’s 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning with two scores, but the Indians’ bats were really swinging by the fourth inning.

Seven straight Haskell batters stroked hits, and six Indians scored.

Back-to-back doubles by Katie Renwick and Katie Smith at the bottom of the order were the highlights.

In the second game, the Indians had an even bigger offensive explosion — plating eight runs in the second to take an overwhelming 8-3 lead.

Haskell's Terri Slinkey, top, slides into third base ahead of the tag of Tabor's Andrea Mendal. The Indians swept Tabor, 9-1 and 8-5, Tuesday at Haskell.

Jamie Tanner led off with a single up the middle, and pitcher Natasha Henson walked. Tara Lena reached after a Tabor player misplayed her sacrifice bunt.

Tanner then scored on Tyla Coatney’s sacrifice fly to right, while Henson came in on a single by Julie Sharp. Cheryl Begay reached on an error to load the bases, and Lena tied the game on Terri Slinkey’s walk.

A seemingly routine fly to center should have been the second out, but Tabor’s third error of the inning allowed two more Indians to score.

Henson capped the eight-run inning with a scorching two-run double to center.

“I think we are capable of having more of those kind of innings than just once a game,” Gary Tanner said. “The key is that now we’re getting comfortable at the plate and seeing the pitching.

“A little more confidence at the plate and I think we can be capable of a few big innings every game.”
