Royals rout Giants

Anderson leaves early because of a sore leg

? Jimmy Gobble pitched three scoreless innings, and Angel Berroa hit a tiebreaking triple in the seventh, sending Kansas City to a 9-3 win over San Francisco on Monday.

Berroa, last season’s AL Rookie of the Year, is batting .545 (6-for-11) this spring with two RBIs.

Left-hander Brian Anderson left the game after two innings after feeling soreness in his leg.

Anderson walked in the top of the third inning and suffered tightness in his leg while scoring on a Carlos Beltran single in the left.

“When he went over third (base), he felt something was tight in his leg,” Royals manager Tony Pena said. “There was no reason for me to send him back out. It’s nothing serious. It’s not a big deal.”

Anderson, who was slated to throw three innings, was not sharp on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out one.

“His ball was moving down and away from the strike zone,” Pena said. “They took a lot of pitches. He was not as aggressive the way he normally is. At least he got his work in.”

Mike Sweeney, the Royals’ first baseman, went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and struck out in his final at-bat. It was Sweeney’s first spring training game after missing one game because of a stiff lower back and the next three days after his wife gave birth to a son on Saturday.

“Not bad for an old dad,” Sweeney said.

Royals pitcher Brian Anderson throws to the plate against San Francisco. The Royals beat the Giants, 9-3, Monday in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Sweeney’s single to right in the third scored Berroa and Beltran to tie the score at 3-3.

“I told him your little boy is going to be a good player,” Pena said and laughed. “His first day and he’s seeing the ball well and is swinging the bat well. He played well in the field.”

Sweeney charged Kirk Rueter’s bunt in the second inning and threw out Neifi Perez at third base.

Gobble allowed one hit and struck out two in three scoreless innings to pick up the victory.

Berroa’s triple in the seventh scored Alexis Gomez to break a 3-3 tie. Dee Brown’s sacrifice fly brought home Berroa, who is 6-for-11 in four games, for the second run of the inning.

Barry Bonds got his first hit of the spring, a run-scoring single in the first.

San Francisco's Barry Bonds is congratulated after hitting an RBI single. Bonds went 1-for-2 against Kansas City on Monday in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The loss extended the Giants’ winless streak to three games, including Sunday’s tie against the Chicago Cubs. The Giants’ lone win of the spring came in their first game against the Cubs on March 4.

The Giants are 1-3-1. The Royals improved to 2-3-1.

San Francisco jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings behind the pitching of Kirk Rueter. But the Royals came back in the third to tie it when Rueter faltered.

Gobble was one of five Royals relievers to hold the Giants to just three hits in seven scoreless innings.
