Kansas softball will try to avoid letdown today

Kansas University’s softball team rode an adrenaline high — and stingy pitching — to three victories last weekend in the debut of new Arrocha Ballpark.

Now the Jayhawks could be facing an emotional letdown with Southwest Missouri State coming to town for a 2 p.m. doubleheader today.

“I don’t expect that,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said. “We’ve been pretty even-keeled this year. Our upperclassmen understand that SMS is a salty team that has snuck up on us in the past.”

Kansas extended its win streak to 10 games Sunday before bowing to Nebraska and standout pitcher Peaches James, 1-0, in the finale of the Jayhawk Classic.

During the four games — two against Utah, two against Nebraska — KU pitchers Kara Pierce and Kassie Humphreys were impressive.

“Both were very good,” Bunge said. “We gave up only three earned runs, but we still gave 15 walks in the four games and that’s too many.”

Walks weren’t costly, however, mainly because opposing batters hit only .133 against Humphreys and .156 against Pierce. In today’s twinbill, Pierce will start the opener and Humphreys the nightcap.

With the pitching solid, Bunge hopes three of her struggling hitters snap out of their early season slumps.

Senior center fielder Mel Wallach and sophomore second baseman Jessica Moppin were the Jayhawks’ leading hitters last season, but both are hitting around the .200 level at this stage. Also, catcher/outfielder Melaney Torres is hitting about .150.

“Those three we expect a lot from,” Bunge said, “and they’re struggling to find their stroke.”

In the meantime, outfielder Ashley Frazer has been a pleasant surprise with a team-leading .350 batting average. Also, designated player Serena Settlemier has slammed seven home runs while utility infielder Sandy Smith has three circuit blows.

“We’ve had some extremes,” Bunge said. “Some of our kids are hitting and some are still looking for their stroke.”

The Jayhawks (12-5) will travel to Carbondale, Ill., this weekend to play games against DePaul, Illinois State, Tennessee Tech and Southern Illinois.
