Lopez leads Royals past Rangers, 10-7

? Mendy Lopez, who played in five positions for Kansas City last season, Saturday helped his effort to make the team, going 4-of-4 with two doubles in the Royals’ 10-7 win over Texas.

Lopez started at first, second and third base, left and right field last season in 52 games before missing 53 games because of a torn right calf.

Lopez also scored a pair of runs and drove in a run Saturday.

“Mendy has improved a lot,” Royals manager Tony Pena said. “Mendy improved in winter ball.”

Lopez was chosen to the Caribbean Series All-Star team as a left fielder in winter ball, helping the Dominican Republic win the series.

Lopez, who played third and shortstop Saturday, was not the only hitting star against the Rangers. First baseman Ken Harvey went 3-for-4 with two doubles and drove in three runs, while Matt Stairs homered in the sixth.

“It is good to have depth on this ball club,” Pena said.

Joe Dawley, who yielded a run on two hits and a sacrifice fly in one inning Friday against Texas, is scheduled to pitch two innings today against Colorado.
