Flea, tick season about to begin

With spring coming, let’s talk about your pet and preparation for this upcoming season. Along with the new growth of flowers and grass comes a new flea and tick season.

These pesky insects are followed by mosquitoes, gnats and the rest of the aerial antagonists including pollen.

With all the new products for fleas and ticks, every pet that comes in and out of the house on a daily basis should be using one of these new products.

Frontline and K-9 Advantix are commonly used and Revolution takes care of fleas and ticks and is a monthly heartworm preventative as well.

After we have seen that our pets are free from fleas and ticks, pollen and grass allergies tend to be waiting in line to cause problems. Constant itching and scratching causes raw areas on the skin and can snowball into a terrible infection in a short period of time.

Whenever you see a wet moist area on your pet’s skin, put baby powder or cornstarch on it. Try to dry the lesion up rather than putting a salve on it, which will only perpetuate the moist gummy situation.

Steroid injections will temporarily stop the itching but are by no means an end to the treatment. Allergy testing can get rid of your pet’s persistent allergies.
