The Northeast Kansas Unit of the American Contract Bridge League played host to a Sectional Bridge Tournament Feb. 20-22 at the Lawrence Holidome. There were 294 players who participated in the three-day competition.

The tournament was co-chaired by Eldon Herd and Vernon Gregg. Don Brennaman managed the hospitality efforts for the tournament. Patt Radford and Jan Brown served as partnership chairs. Harriett Olson organized the teams of caddies for the tournament. Bobbie Figgins served at the welcome and information desk.

The Friday afternoon Open Pairs competition was comprised of two sections well represented with Lawrence players. The winner of one section was Michael Blumenfeld and Lois Clark. The winner of the other section was Olivier Urruty and Thomas Mori. Others placing in the competition included Phyllis Brownlee, Betty Collier, Bobbie Figgins, Emily Foster, Marti Hartman, Chuck Hedges, Yvonne Hedges, Eldon Herd, Glenna Herd, Russell LaForce, Patt Radford, Jerry Sloan and Ilse Steinhardt.

The Friday evening Open Pairs competition had two pairs winning in the B sessions. They were Jerry Sloan and Ken Pike, and Olivier Urruty and Thomas Mori. Chris Lane and Shirlie Reese won a C session. Others who placed in the competition were Phyllis Brownlee, Larry Bodle, Robert Huffman, Mary Fenlon, Barbara McCorkle, Kent McCullough, Donna Munson, Virginia Seaver, Harry Shaffer, Terry Tolar, Mary Treece, Shirley Vaughn and Klee Zaricky.

The Friday 99er Pairs afternoon competition was won by Don Daugherty and Harry Talley. Bill Hamilton and Barbara Hamilton tied for first place in the evening competition with Harriett Olson and Artie Shaw. Winning the evening B session was the team of Albert Ballard and Emily Foster.

Saturday started with the Knock-Out Teams competition. Winner of the B Bracket was the team of Vince Russo, Terry Tolar, Jerry Sloan and Donna Harrison. The team of Eldon Herd, Glenna Herd, Dianne Childs and Judy Hildreth tied for third place with the team of Patt Radford, John Hickey, Yvonne Hedges and Chuck Hedges. In the C Bracket, the team of Lester Dalton and Julia Dalton placed second.

The Saturday afternoon and evening Open Pairs competition had Donna Johnson and Beckie Staci placing second overall in B. In the single evening session Don Brennaman and Ken Pike placed first in A, B and C. Others who placed in the competition included Phyllis Brownlee, Bobbie Figgins, Marti Hartman, Madelyn Jenks, Bobbie McCorkle, Amy Miller, Daniel Osman, Grant Sutton, Mary Treece and Olivier Urruty.

Thirty-five teams competed in the Sunday Swiss Team games. The team of Ken Pike, Bill Schutzel, Don Brennaman and Olivier Urruty placed first in the C strata and second in the B strata. Vince Russo, Terry Tolar, Harry Shaffer and Jerry Sloan placed third in the B strata. Larry Bodle, Clyde Romer, Russell LaForce and Kent McCullough placed sixth in the B strata.

Chris Lane, Klee Zaricky, Betty Collier and Shirley Reese placed third in C. Robert Huffman, Helen Huffman, Bill Hamilton and Barbara Hamilton placed third in D.

  • The Knights of Columbus Council 1372 had a baby shower in January at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. A baby bed was placed in the church to collect items. A chili feed fund-raiser took place Jan. 24. The knights, St. John’s parishioners and chili feed raised more than $1,800 for Birthright, Gabriel House and Mother to Mother.
  • The University Bridge Club announces the winners from its Feb. 28 game. Al and Carol Smith were hosts.

Blue winners were Iva Koleber, first; Kit Carlsen, second; Alice Akins, third; George Bocquin, fourth; and Tom Waller, fifth.

Pink winners were Wanda Kring, first; Florence McNicoll, second; Bette Lukens, third; Hazel Stellmacher, fourth; and Ailene Bocquin, fifth.

  • The Lawrence 299ers Duplicate Bridge Club met Feb. 25. Five tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the play.

Sitting North-South, Bill Hamilton and Barb Hamilton claimed first place in A and B. Mary Beth Treece and Phyllis McAdoo placed second in A and B.

Competing East-West, Betty Spalsbury and Al Ballard took first place in A and B. Helen Huffman and Bob Huffman took second in A.

  • The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met Feb. 27. Eight tables of competitors played a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Playing North-South, Patt Radford and Betty Collier took first place in A. Harry Shaffer and Lynn Hui were second. Shirley Reese and Yvonne Hedges placed third in A and first in B. Harriet Olson and Don Brennaman were first in C.

Sitting East-West, Olivier Urruty and Dan Osman swept first place in A, B and C. Shirley Vaughn and Wanda Durbin were second in A. Jean Otney and Phyllis Brownlee finished third in A and second in B.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. Nine and a half tables competed in a stratified game that used a Rover Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the game.

Sitting North-South, Lynn Hui and Judy Bevan claimed first place in A, B and C. Glenna Herd and Russ LaForce placed second in A and B. Terry Tolar and Harry Shaffer placed third in A. Lester Dalton and Shirlie Vaughn were fourth in A.

Playing the East-West cards, Virginia Seaver and Julia Brooks finished in first place in A. Phyllis Brownlee and Madelyn Jenks placed second in A and first in B and C. Olivier Urruty and Don Brennaman finished third in A and second in B and C. Jerry Sloan and Eldon Herd took fourth in A.
