The week: Lawrence High is just one game away from a state tournament berth, and much of the credit must go Ricks’ way. In Lawrence’s 43-39 victory over Topeka High in sub-state Wednesday, Ricks abused Topeka’s forwards, scoring 21 points and adding 15 rebounds. She converted three-point plays twice, the first one opening the game’s scoring and the second giving the Lions the lead for good. Ricks is averaging 12.7 points per game for the 14-7 Lions.

Sport: Wrestling

The week: Broadbent capped a successful sophomore campaign with a second-place finish at the Class 5A state wrestling meet in Wichita. Broadbent, who was seeded first after winning his regional, won his first three matches in Wichita before losing the 103-pound championship match to Newton’s Seth Matzler on Saturday. Broadbent finished the season with a 40-4 record. He was one of four area wrestlers to top the 40-win plateau this year.
