Ironic policy

To the editor:

The State Department reports a record crop of opium poppies in Afghanistan. Is this the same country the Bush administration is claiming to have successfully rid of the Taliban and produced an American-friendly government and new constitution? But wait! We have a war on drugs, and we know drugs support terrorists. It seems we are supplying resources to the same people we are fighting. The irony goes unmentioned in the media. We have a poor history of nation-building. We are lousy at it. Look at Haiti. We got out too soon and failed to support the democratic government, and now we are back. We have a foreign policy that is totally out of touch with reality.
