7 KU athletes earn academic honor

Seven Kansas University basketball players earned Academic All-Big 12 Conference honors Wednesday.

Men’s players Christian Moody and Brett Olson and women’s players Crystal Kemp and Leila Mengüç were named to the first team, while Aaron Miles, Moulaye Niang and Blair Waltz earned second-team honors.

Olson, a 6-foot-7 forward from Chanute, has earned his second straight Academic All-Big 12 honor. A walk-on, Olson has appeared in eight games this season and is the only member of the 23-man Academic All-Big 12 team to record a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

Moody, a 6-7 forward from Asheville, N.C., who is studying pre-medicine, has played in 18 games this year and averages 1.3 points and 0.8 rebounds.

Mengüç, the lone senior on the KU women’s squad, was named a first-team selection for the third time in her Jayhawk career. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Mengüç is majoring in communication studies.

Kemp, one of only two players to start every game for KU this year, is the Jayhawks’ top scorer with 13.5 points per game. Kemp ranks 12th in the league in scoring and seventh in field-goal percentage. Kemp, a Topeka native, is undecided on a major.

Miles, a 6-1 junior from Portland, Ore., makes his first appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 team. A communication-studies major, Miles ranks fourth on the team with 9.2 points per game and leads the Big 12 with 7.4 assists per game.

Niang, a sophomore accounting major from El Cajon, Calif., also makes his first appearance on the team. He averages 1.0 points and 1.1 rebounds.

Waltz, a junior from Leawood, posts 3.7 points and 1.7 rebounds. She is majoring in business.

Criteria for Academic All-Big 12 first-team selection is a 3.20 or higher grade-point average, while second-team picks maintain a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
