Sebelius: State should be aggressive in marketing its military bases

? Kansas should aggressively sell its military bases to the federal government as installations that don’t have the problems that bases in other states do, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said Monday.

Sebelius said the state’s four installations — Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth, McConnell Air Force Base and Forbes Field — have more up-to-date roads and infrastructure than other bases around the nation.

Also, she said, some bases in other states have zoning conflicts with their surrounding communities, because suburbs have grown up near them.

Sebelius said Kansas has a positive message for Department of Defense officials as they consider which military installations to target in a new round of base realignment and closure. Congress is scheduled to decide which bases to reorganize, downsize or close by late next year.

The governor’s remarks opened the first meeting of the state Strategic Military Planning Commission, which she appointed last month to defend Kansas’ bases. State and military officials estimate Kansas bases contribute more than $2 billion to the state’s economy each year.

“This won’t be a short-term project,” she said. “It’s one of the most important things we can work on in the next 18 months to two years.”
